How Hospice Can Help: Grief Resolution Factors

Dealing with Loss

Some key factors that impact upon resolution of grief are:
  • The bereaved person's relationship with the deceased
  • The length of the patient's illness
  • The ability of the bereaved to participate in the care of the patient
  • The bereaved person's ability to express emotions and accept support
  • The strength and nature of the family system
  • The bereaved person's general health and lifestyle
  • The bereaved person's reaction to previous loss
  • The availability of support systems for the bereaved person

Hospice's bereavement program incorporates many resources that have proven effective over time, the most fundamental resource being the commitment of people who listen. Hospice offers individual counseling and memorial services at the time of death, follow up visits, follow up phone contact, group sessions, supportive social events and more, as needed, for up to one year after the patients death.
